![]() ![]() Ashton’s big book is based on the assumption that the key questions regarding the gospel are those tackled by Rudolf Bultmann in his classic commentary of 1941, and throughout the book he is in continuous dialogue with Bultmann’s methods and conclusions. Its gestation and birth are a testimony to the world before the Research Assessment Exercise when a slower and for that reason more long lasting contribution to knowledge could be achieved. At that time the writing of his justly celebrated study of the Gospel of John was still ten years away. We briefly touched on a topic witch we had both independently noticed, namely, what he was to term ‘intimations of apocalyptic’ in the Gospel of John. I remember well the first conversation I had with John Ashton thirty years ago.
